difference between moba and mmorpg in short
Answers
MOBA = Multiplayer Online Battle Arena
Moba’s are generally shorter games last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, with a select number of players on either side, anywhere from 3 to 5 usually constitute a team. Teams are either pre-arranged or randomized in the game. The player selects one ‘hero’ for that particular match which has unique abilities. During the match there are often ways the player can progress that hero’s ability’s for the duration of that individual match. There are often no lasting consequences to player progression or sometimes a scorecard or ranking system or perhaps points to spend on cosmetics. Each match is independent of the other’s.
MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game
These are usually set in larger worlds, where exploration, questing and progression of a single character is the norm. A player selects one character and that character usually remains through their entire experience ( some people like playing multiple characters but its more a personal choice, rather than game design) Often they have a deep story, or lore which follows the individual character to get stronger over time by doing tasks within the game and getting better equipment. This progression isn’t temporary like it is mostly with MOBA’s. Progression of story and character can differ between MMO’s some have rather short experiences of a few hours, some can last many days.
Once completing the story and the questing generally to a level cap, the character then reaches an end game where there is usually different options to pursue such as pvp, dungeons, raids or achievements. The character gets to choose which direction/s to focus on as there are multiple options, all adding to the progress and continuity of a single character and their story within the specific world and their place within their community.
