Answer:

Explanation

Modern transportation systems are using internal combustion engines or electric traction but we need to say that electric traction powers only a small minority of the transportation systems. Only trams, trolleybuses, subways and some trains are electric. The vast majority of transportation systems in present days are powered by internal combustion engines. But let’s go back in time when internal combustion engines weren’t invented yet.

That will be a world where steam engine was king. And of course cars and planes didn’t existed back then. So what transportation systems did we have back then? Steam trains and steam ships. Electric traction existed even in the old era of steam engine because it is such an old invention, so in the big cities we could encounter trams. But what when there were not even electric motors? Then you have steam trains and steam ships but on the land where there weren’t any railways built yet you would still use horse drawn carriages, or simply travel on horseback.

And when there weren’t even railways at all you would use steam powered ships to the ocean or alongside big rivers. Back then traveling along big rivers with paddle steamers was somehow a replacement for the railways that hadn’t been built yet.

But how was in the times when not even the steam engine existed? Well back then there were only two means of transportation. The horse on land, and sailships onto the ocean.
