Although I think the previous answers are very good, I think there is a slightly different interpretation that you may find useful. It should also be noted that these terms really apply to European history and are not universal throughout the world.
The “ancient period” encompasses the period from before mankind developed technological skills through to when the Western World (essentially Europe) reached its first height of technological skill and started to slide backward. This is most commonly dated to 476 CE when the last Western Roman Emperor abdicated.
The medieval period is defined by a loss if technological skill and increase in superstition. It ends as a renewed interest in scientific and philosophical thought start to take hold. There is less agreement on when the medieval period ends than with the ancient period. Some date it to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Others, to the colonization of what became the Americas. Another choice is the beginning of the renaissance but that has its own set of complications.
The modern period begins when the medieval period ends. As with the ancient period, the modern period is best characterized by the flowering and growth of science, technology, literature and art.
