Mountains are very high extending upto thousands of kilometers whereas plateaus extend few hundreds of kilometers from sea level... example Himalayas are mountains whereas the most commonly known plateau in India is Deccan plateau...

mountains are sparsely populated not suitable for farming where as plateau are rich with reserve minerals.
