Major differences between the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha:-
Though all bills must be introduced and passed from both houses, money bills can only be introduced in Lok Sabha, if Lok Sabha pass the bill Rajya Sabha can only suggest amendments in the bill which may or may not be accepted by Lok Sabha within 14 days. If Rajya Sabha doesn’t pass the bill within 14 days the bill is deemed to be passed by both houses.Lok Sabha majority is required to form a government at central level, Rajya Sabha majority is not required to form a government.Lok Sabha represent the people of India, Rajya Sabha represents the states of India this is why Lok Sabha is lower house and Rajya Sabha is the upper house.Lok Sabha is dissolved with the lack of majority by the President, Rajya Sabha is never dissolved. The Speaker of Lok Sabha is elected by its members, in Rajya Sabha the Vice-President is the Chairman. Two people from the Anglo-Indian community can be elected to Lok Sabha if they aren’t represented. 12 people from fields of arts, literature etc can be nominated in Rajya Sabha by president upon recommendation by the cabinet led by the prime minister.During the emergency, Rajya Sabha works as the sole house of Parliament.Rajya Sabha has the power to form All-India services like IAS, IPS etc.Rajya Sabha has the power to remove vice-president by 2/3rds majority.A cabinet cannot have more than 15% of its Lok Sabha members. If a bill is failed to passed, a joint sitting can be made where the Lok Sabha can override Rajya Sabha easily.Tenure of Lok Sabha MP is 5 years, tenure of Rajya Sabha MP is 6 years.People of a respective constituency elect Lok Sabha members , Rajya Sabha members are elected by state legislatures of the respective state.Lok Sabha members are voted through First Past The Post system whereas, Rajya Sabha members are voted through Single Transferable Vote system.
