Fission is the division of an atomic nucleus by the interaction of an atomic particle such as a neutron fired or aimed at it. This will cause the nucleus to divide and release energy in the process. Only certain atomic elements are capable of doing this and usually they are heavier more unstable elements such as Uranium or the artificial man made element Plutonium.
Fusion is the forced uniting of hydrogen atoms to form a helium atom. This requires a tremendous amount of energy to accomplish. Usually caused by a fission reaction to reach the necessary temperature required, but in the process fusion releases even more energy than goes into it.
The sun operates using the fusion process, turning hydrogen into helium. And because of the sun’s tremendous pressure and heat, it can produces elements all the way up to iron. The heavier elements beyond iron are believed to result from the tremendous energy levels only released in Nova, Super Nova or HyperNova explosions.

The word fission means "a splitting or breaking up into parts" Nuclear fission releases heat energy by splitting atoms. The surprising discovery that it was possible to make a nucleus divide was based on Albert Einstein’s prediction that mass could be changed into energy. In 1939, scientist began experiments, and one year later Enrico Fermi built the first nuclear reactor.
