O2 is bonded covalently, the reason that they form this compound is due to their electronegativity, for they were initially unstable, that they had to do so to of course satisfy their electronegativity. Anyways, the covalent bonding allows for sharing of valence electrons, thereby since one oxygen atom needs 2 electrons to satisfy a stable octet, the other oxygen shares it with the following first, and vice versa. Thus, they both sustain a stable octet. That is the reason atoms form chemical bonds, to be more stable. Chemical bonds differ from many kinds, ionic, covalent, metallic, hydrogen, dative etc. You should perhaps ask your teacher regarding this, it gets pretty intriguing once you unravel more.

"o 2 is a neatral malecale with a net charge of o . there are no other different atoms contributions to the net charge, there for each oxygen atom must by to same . therefore each oxygen atom has avalency of I"
