Orientation behaviour, piloting, and navigation are the important cues that are used to study the migration of birds and animals.
Piloting is a kind of animal behaviour when an animal from one familiar landmark to another until it reaches its destination.
Orientation behaviour in animals is used to detect directions and travel in particular paths until they reach a destination. The cues for these orientation behaviours include compass directions like the magnetic fields, stars, the location of the sun etc.

Orientation Behavior:
An animal's orientation behavior is the one which allows an animal to be places in a favorable environment. It occurs in two ways:
One is the deliberate movement which occurs towards or away from stimulus. It is called Taxis. Other is the random movement which is independent of stimulus. It is called Kinesis.
Piloting:
Piloting or navigation is the ability of animals to find their way by using environmental cues and instincts. Some animals and specially birds follow the sun as they crosses the sky from east to west. Some animals use their strong sense of smell to help them navigate. Some marine animals specially adult fish use ocean currents to migrate to the breeding grounds.
