Difference between pachytene and diplotene
Explanation:
- Pachytene : The stage of meiotic prophase that immediately follows the zygotene and that is characterized by paired chromosomes thickened and visibly divided into chromatids and by the occurrence of crossing-over. During pachytene the homologous chromosomes thicken and become recombinant. Crossing over of segments of genetic information occurs between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes, forming exchange sites called chiasmata and resulting in recombination.
- Diplotene : A stage of MEIOSIS near the end of Prophase 1, in which the CHROMATIDS become separated (except at the CHIASMATA), and the chromosomal material is contracting. The chiasmata indicate that CROSSING OVER is taking place.
