Cytochrome are a class of flavoproteins that are sensitive to blue light. They are found in plants and animals. Cryptochromes are involved in the circadian rhythms of plants and animals, and possibly also in the sensing of magnetic fields in a number of species. The name cryptochrome was proposed as a portmanteau combining the cryptic nature of the photoreceptor, and the cryptogamic organisms on which many blue-light studies were carried out.[5]

Cytochromes are heme containing proteins that performs oxidation reduction reactions in cell with the help of enzymes and generate energy for the cell.

These proteins contain iron group in the center which performs reversible oxidation reduction reductions. These proteins are further classifies on the bases of the presence of apoprotein.

On the other hand, phytochrome is a group of proteins which are linked with a pigment molecule. This protein regulates stem growth, seed germination, leaf expansion and few others process in plants.
