Pig Iron

Pig iron is obtained by smelting in the blast furnace.

Also known as hot metal or blast furnace iron.

It contains iron carbide which makes pig iron to be brittle.

It contains 4.5% carbon and has more impurities such as 1.7% manganese, 0.3% phosphoroud, 0.04% sulphur and 1% silicon

Cast iron

Cast iron is obtained by melting pig iron and coke using a hot air blast.

Also known as Molded pig iron.

Cast iron tends to be brittle, except for malleable cast irons.

It contains lower amount of carbon (3 to 3.5% ) than pig iron.

Cast iron has lot of engineering properties so, that it can be used in many ways like for making custom iron railings, fences, sanitary fittings, rail chairs, casting molds etc.
