PLASMOLYSIS IS THE SHRINKAGE OF THE PLANT CELL WHEN IT IS PLACED IN THE HYPOTONIC SOLUTION. THE SOLVENT PARTICLES MOVE OUT FROM THE CELL CAUSING IT TO SHRINK. DEPLASMOLYSIS IS ITS OPPOSITE PROCESS WHERE THE SOLVENT PARTICLES MOVE IN THE CELL CAUSING IT TO BULGE/ REGAIN ITS SHAPE.

NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Plasmolysis:

 Plasmolysis occurs when plant cells are placed in hypertonic solution.

 Water moves out first from cytoplasm then from vacuole.

 This causes protoplast to shrink away from the walls and the cell is said to be plasmolysed.

 The process of plasmolysis is usually reversible.

 When cells are placed in hypotonic solution, water diffuses into the cells, causing cytoplasm to build up pressure against the wall, it is called turgor pressure. Cells are said to be turgid.

 Because of rigidity of cell wall, cells do not rupture.

Deplasmolysis:

 If a plasmolysed plant cell is immediately placed in hypotonic solution, water enters the cell and plasmolysed cytoplasm swells up and comes in contact with cell wall. The process is called deplasmolysis.

 Prolonged plasmolysis kills the protoplast.
