Politics is influencing people to abide by secular or nonspiritual laws and customs.
Religion is a set of laws and customs based on a belief in spiritual or metaphysical forces.
Politics and religion get mixed up because politicians exploit spiritual beliefs to achieve temporal goals and some religions claim spiritual rewards and consequences for worldly actions.
For example: No one can become a president of the United States without giving lip service to being a Christian. It doesn’t matter that in word and deed they are obviously not Christian, as long as they say it, they’re fine.
For example: Die a martyr and you’ll get 75 virgins in heaven.
For example: We’ll purify this poor witch’s soul by burning her alive.
Both politics and religion are systems of governance. The belief in a Supreme Being is spiritualism and not a religion. On the other hand, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are religions because they are sets of rules by which the true believer should govern his or her life.
