sediment is a collection of small particles, particularly dirt, that precipitates from a river or other body of water while precipitation is (meteorology) any or all of the forms of water particles, whether liquid or solid, that fall from the atmosphere (eg, rain, hail, snow or sleet) it is a major class of hydrometeor, but it is distinguished from cloud, fog, dew, rime, frost, etc, in that it must fall it is distinguished from cloud and virga in that it must reach the ground.

Precipitation-Any forms of water or particles of water (snow, hail, rain) That fall from the atmosphere is known as precipitation
Sedimentation-The process of particles settling at the bottom of a body of water is known as sedimentation.
