1. Primary metabolites :

(i) They are involved in normal growth, development and reproduction.

(ii) They are not poisonous.

Examples: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins etc.

2. Secondary metabolites :

(i) They are not directly involved in the normal growth, development and reproduction .

(ii) some of these compoundsare poisonous.

Examples : alkaloids, tenins, rasins, gums, and latex etc.
