Primary tillage is the first tillage after the harvest. This is done when the soil is wet enough to allow ploughing (though in some cases it is done when the soil is dry) and strong enough to give levels of traction. It is done to attain a decent depth and kill weeds by removing them by the root.

Secondary tillage is performed after the primary tillage and is done for various reasons like levelling the surface, reducing the size of the clods, and incorporating fertilizers. this can also be done to remove weeds.
