Definition

Production-planning makes modifications (changes) in the production plans to remove the weakness in the production process.

Function

Involves deciding the quantity of products to be produced and cost involved in it on the basis of sales forecast. This is the process of determining the sequence of operations to be performed in the production process. Routing determines what work must be done, where and how.

Production control

Definition

Production control collects information about the production process. It finds out the weaknesses in the production process and informs the production planners about it.

Objective

Provision of raw material, equipment, machines and labour. To organize production schedule in conformity with the demand forecasts. The resources are used in the best possible manner in such a way that the cost of production is minimized and delivery date is maintained.

Function

The production control is the function of management which plans, directs and controls the material supply and processing activities of an enterprise so that specified products are produced by specified methods to meet an approved sales programme.
