Difference between quad core and octa core

As everyone else said, Quad core means 4 physical cores.

Octa means eight physical cores.

But there are certain concerns here.

Many of you are probably thinking about Bulldozer architecture from AMD, and many of you are about HYPERTHREADING by Intel.

Amd’s bulldozer FX-8xxx cpu lineup is actually advertised as eight core but it essentially has 4 modules and 8 threads. These modules have Independent fpu(s) which are operated upon by 2 cores. Which is different from intel cpus bcz they have each physical core with its own fpu, in fx cards two cores share one fpu. (It doesn't mean they are bad, as for performance , no software utilises this kind architecture which if done , in theory, should give great performance , neither amd nor software manufacturers are at blame here).

Now coming to intel, they implement Hyperthreading(HT). In this, one physical core splits into 2 logical/virtual core and manage 2 threads. This gives great performance boosts, and is especially useful for processors with low core count (like i3, lower i5s). In some cases it is seen that this hampers gaming performance.

Although it wasn't necessary for me to write such a long answer, but i just wanted to elaborate, as many of you are using these intel and amd chips. All the stuff is explained in simple language, the reality is a bit more complex, but it gives you a good basic idea about multicore processors you are using.

Thank you for reading.

Answer:

The terms octa-core and quad-core denote the number of processor cores in a CPU. Octa is eight, quad is four. ... When advanced tasks are needed, however, the faster set of four cores will kick in. A more accurate term than octa-core, then, would be “dual quad-core”.
