Read write able memory devices can be used multiple times to store data on it. For example, a hard disk on your computer or a pen-drive. Also they don't need any power supply in-order to do so, which is why they are known as non-volatile memory.

Read only memories are used in devices such as calculators, digital watches and even some home appliances eg:- washing machines. A chip holding the memory is embedded with the device so that the program cannot be erased or re-programmable. That is why they are known as Read Only Memory.

By the other hand there is volatile memory, which is depended on a power source. it can hold any data as long as the device receive a constant power supply. eg:- RAM (Random Access memory) .
