Real numbers are often described as those which can be represented by decimals (1, 2.75, 101.42), including the case where there decimal goes on for ever (0.33333333…, 1213.123123123….) and the case where this decimal expansion can have no pattern (3.141592653…; the last part admits transcendental numbers such as pi and e into the set).

Complex numbers are an extension of the Real Numbers that add a new number i into the mix. If a and b are Real Numbees then a + ib is a Complex Number. The a term is called the Real component and the ib is called the Imaginary component. This means that Imaginary numbers are ones where the Real component is zero so just ib where b is Real.

Well what is this i? Well it is defined as the square root of - 1, a concept that some struggle to get their head round sometimes.

Complex numbers arose out of a desire to always be able to determine the roots of polynomials (with one of Integer, Rational or Real coefficients). Sometimes something as simple as quadratic equations need us to evaluate the square root of a negative number.

While this may seem a rather loopy idea, Complex numbers are actually the most natural way to describe a wide range of physical phenomena and are actually commonly used in a very practical discipline, engineering.

Real numbers include all rational numbers (numbersthat can be written like fractions) and all irrationalnumbers (numbers that cannot be written like fractions). Each of the infinite number of points on the real number line represents a real number.
