- Reflex actions are sudden, involuntary reactions of the body in response to stimuli. They occur without the involvement of the conscious areas of the brain. Therefore, all reflex actions are unconscious actions. Reflex actions occur both from the brain and spinal cord which are the parts of the central nervous system. Most often these actions are mainly formed from the spinal cord. When sudden responses are required, instructions are given by the spinal cord itself. Impulses reach the brain only after that. Later conscious responses are made. Walking is a voluntary action which happens under the control of cerebellum of the brain. Walking is aquired or learnt as we grow. The thought is accepeted by the brain upon necessity and is processed under its control.2) When the neuron is stimulated, the dendritic tips generate the impulse. The impulse is carried to axon which releases some chemicals (neurotransmitters) at its end. These chemicals cross the gap called as synapse existing between the neurons. *The action potential reaches the presynaptic terminal to activate synaptic transmission process. *The membrane of the axon opens the calcium channels to allow the calcium to flow into the membrane. *Due to increase in concentration of calcium ions, many vesicles with neurotransmitter chemicals are formed. * These fuse with axon membrane and drop their contents into extracellular space. *Neurotransmitter chemicals diffuse into the receptors on the membrane of the target cell. *Neurotransmitters bind with the receptors to activate them. *Depending on the type of receptors activated there is an effect on the target cell.(getting excited, getting inhibited or getting altered.
