The Anarchical and Revolutionary Crimes Act, popularly known as Rowlatt Act, was passed in February,1919. It was a legislation passed by the Imperial Legislative Council, the then Legislature of British India. The Act was repressive in nature as it allowed certain political cases to be tried without the presence of juries and the internment of suspects without trial. It was named after the British judge, Sir Sidney Rowlatt, as it was framed on the recommendation of a committee presided by him.
Gandhiji gave a call in 1919 for a satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act, passed as above. This protest came to be referred as the Rowlatt Satyagraha.
