Thus, the difference between secularism and secularization is that secularism is more of a philosophical position about the way things should be, while secularization is the effort to implement that philosophy - even sometimes with force.

According to the Constitution , the key elements of secularism in India are as follows :-

1. All religions are equal before law .

2. The Indian State does not have an official religion . This can be interpreted that India is a non religious State , and that all religions are equal. This means that government buildings like courts , police stations,  government offices and government schools cannot display or promote any one religion.

Secondly , in order to respect the sentiments of all religions and to uphold the interest of certain sections of the society , the Indian government does make certain exceptions and intervene in some religious practices .
