In filtration, a filter paper is used through which the mixture is passed. Due to this, the insoluble larger solids remain back and the rest of the liquid passes. Thus, the mixture gets separated.
In sedimentation, the mixture is allowed to stand for sometime until the heavier insoluble particles settle at the bottom of the container thus separating the liquid and the heavier insoluble solid. Usually, sedimentation is followed by decantation, that is, pouring out the upper liquid without disturbing the settled particles.
