"Pictures" sounds dated. "Do you want to go the the pictures?" "Picture" is sometimes by people in the film business or people who want to sound like they're in the film business. "It was a hard picture to cast."
"Cinema" is used fairly commonly in the UK. In the U.S. it can sound pretentious, but not if used by people who are passionate about the subject. "Joe Six-Pack" would never "cinema."
