The major difference is that the series circuits have the same amount of current flow through all the components placed in it. It got its name due to the fact that components are placed in the same single path of the flow of current in the electric circuit. On the other hand, in parallel circuits, the components are placed in parallel with each other. This circuit splits the current flow. The current flowing from the source will be divided into the current flowing through each of these components.
