SIGMA BOND
1) The bond formed side to side overlap is called sigma bond.
2) It is always present in single bonded molecules.
3) It is formed between s-s, s-px, s-py, s-pz, px-px overlap.
4) It has low energy and most stability and considered as covalent bond which is property of covalent compounds.
5) It shows no bond resonance or hyperconjugation but don't show resonance.
6) In sigma bond electron pairs are confined between two atoms which makes it localized bonding.
7) Compounds having localized sigma bonding are fully described by a single Lewis structure and their properties such as bond lengths, bond energies & dipole moment can be predicted easily.
8) Sigma bond don't form conjugated systems because all conjugated systems have alternate single and double or triple bonds.
Pi BOND
1) Pi bond is formed due to head to head overlapping of orbitals.
2) It is present in double bonded and triple bonded molecules.
3) Its energy is greater than sigma bond so it is less stable than sigma bond.
4) It is also present in covalent bonded molecules which have double and triple covalent bond.
5) It is formed between py-py and pz-pz overlapping of orbitals.
6) In pi bond one or more electron pairs can move from one atom to another atom which makes it delocalized chemical bonding.
7) It shows resonance but don't show hyperconjugation.
8) Due to resonance it's stability increases and makes compounds stable.
9) Pi bond show the feature of conjugated systems as all conjugated systems have alternate single and double or triple bonds.
