eg: Sam ran to the park.

past continuous is what was happening in the past.
eg: Sam was running in the park.
was running is the verb in past continuous

Simple past
=subject +second form of verb+object.
Example- He sat on a bench.
Continuous
=subject+was were +first form of verb+ing+object.
Example- He was sitting on a bench.
=subject +second form of verb+object.
Example- He sat on a bench.
Continuous
=subject+was were +first form of verb+ing+object.
Example- He was sitting on a bench.
