The difference between sludge and scum are as follows:
- Scum consists of materials that float on water, such as grease, oil, and fats whereas, sludge is denser than water and is from much of the solid portion of sewage waste.
- The middle layer consists of liquid and suspended solids, and the bottom layer is the sludge.
- Sewage sludge is solid, semisolid, or liquid residue generated during the treatment of domestic sewage in treatment works.
- Sewage sludge is not limited to domestic septage. The scum or solids removed in primary, secondary, or advanced wastewater treatment processes and material derived from sewage sludge.
- Sludge is also known as biosolids and the byproduct of the treatment.
