particles in a solid are tightly packed as the inter molecular forces are greater in them which doesn't allow the particles to move easily. On the other hand, inter molecular forces are intermediate as compared to solids and gaseous. Particles in gaseous substances randomly move as the inter molecular forces between them are very very small resulting in the free movement of particles.
