The variation observed among plants regenerated from gametic cell cultures is termed as gametoclonal variation. ... For genetic reasons, it is necessary todistinguish between plants regenerated from somatic (2n, somaclones) and gametic tissues (n, gametoclones), and also between somaclonal and gametoclonal variation.

Somaclonal variation:

  • Somaclonal variation involves fusion of somatic cells
  • It involves the production of allotetraploid plants happens.
  • In Somaclonal variation, there is equal contribution of cytoplasm from both the plants
  • Segregation does not occurs  in Somaclonal variation
  • Wide crosses can be made easily.

Gametoclonal Varioation:

  • Gametoclonal varioation involves fusion of male and female gamete
  • It results on production of the diploid plant.
  • Cytoplasm contribution is more from female parent
  • Wide crosses are associated with sexual problem
  • Leads to occurrence of segregation.
