the annual rings are the activity ofcambium ring which is not uniform through out the year but affected by variation in climate.as temperate areas, xylem produced in spring season are of wide lumen and in autumn it's narrow

transition from spring wood to autumn wood is gradual while transition from autumn to spring is sudden

spring wood :- it's produced in favourable season, also contains major part of annual ring and is larger and wider and lighter in color..

autumn wood:- it's produced in unfavorable conditions and generally the less part of annual rings and is smaller and narrow it's darker in color and more thickened.

sap wood and heart wood :- as the result of continued secondary growth for several years, the older parts of stem have a part of secondary xylem which becomes non functional ,,the central portion of xylem which is tracheids and vessels become filled with resins and tannins produced by adjacent living cells, here xylem channels are blocked by bladder like ingrowth of parenchyma cells. these bladder like ingrowth is called tyloses .due to tannins the wood become dark, this non functional part of secondary xylem is called heart wood or duramen .outer light colored functional part is called sap wood or aluburnum .heart wood posses gums, resins, tannins and other aromatic compounds or essential oils etc. these substances are called extractives..

hope it helps u
