In a standing wave, the wave does not move, but there is an oscillation at every point. A standing wave can be obtained by a superposition of a left- and right-moving travelling wave. An other way of obtaining a standing wave is to contain it in a finite region such as requiring the the amplitude be 0 at both ends.
