Strength of an acid depends on the degree of ionization only, and so is independent from the concentration of acid. When
you look at the formula of an acid, you have no clues as to how strong
the acid is, becaue there is no general rule of thumb that can separate
them just by inspecting the formula.Strong acid has a lower pH and conducts electricity better under same concentrations. Since degree of ionization is higher, there are more mobile hydrogen ions to measure a lower pH and to conduct electricity. Some strong acids are strong ozidizing or reducing agents, likesulfuric acid H2SO4nitric acid HNO3Perchloric acid HClO4They are strong oxidizing agent as you can see that there is high number of oxygen in the formula.Hydroiodic acid HIVitamin CHydrosulfuric acid H2Sand
so on are strong reducing agents. Since HI is strong acid (even
stronger than HCl) there is simply no one even by comparing the chemcial
properties to deduce whether it is strong or not.Chemists
either use 1M of acid to check its pH and see if it is smaller than a
certain value or not, or usr something called the Ka or pKa value and
determine the threshold to see if it is strong or weak.
