Difference between submarine canyon and ocean trench

Canyons can only be formed if the water entering and water exit spots have a different gradient in the slop (entry is higher than the exit) and require a combination of soft rock which can be wore down by water intermixed with hard rock that cannot be worn down easily by water to form the canyon walls. The sea canyons are generally an extension of the land canyons and are caused by the same reasons. Usually Canyons are not very deep (when compared to Trenches).
On the other hand, Oceanic Trenches are formed by tectonic plate activity and can only happen along the points where the tectonic plates meet and now where else. Also, oceanic trenches are generally far deeper (upto thousands of meters) when compared with Canyons and they generally occur naturally only on the seabed.
These are the differences between naturally occurring Canyons and Trenches.
