Suspensions and colloids are heterogeneous mixtures. A suspension is identifiable because its particles are large and settle out of the dispersing medium due to the effects of gravity. The dispersed particles of a colloid are intermediate in size between those of a solution and a suspension.

The colloids are relatively homogenous, while the suspensions are heterogeneous. The colloid particles can pas"s through filter paper, while the particles of the suspensions cannot. Examples of colloids are gelatin in water, starch in water, sodium chloride in benzene, etc.
