Prolonged release means long time releasing system while extended release system means system which extends the releasing time. ER and PR are the same and have single functionality of extending the time of release of a drug from dosage forms.

The Difference Between Sustained Release And Prolonged Release Are:-
- Sustained-release tablets are mostly time-release drugs, they can either be discharged instantly or in small amounts after administration whereas, Prolonged Discharge formulations as the drugs which are administered that are meant to prolong their potency in the bloodstream.
- Sustained release tablets are in a structure of dosage where a drug is allocated to a patient at a given or estimated rate to maintain a specific concentration of the allotted drug over a certain period of time into the system of the patient while lessening apparent side effects whereas, a Prolonged Release is meant to impact on some form to be discharged in small portions over a long period of time with no certainty to time or rate of concentration.
