Difference between symbiotic and non symbiotic nitrogen fixation

Symbiotic and non symbiotic. These terms can be used together when talking about a particular property of bacteria like nitrogen fixation. Some bacteria are able to fix atmospheric nitrogen only with the help of their partner i.e. symbiotically eg. rhizobia in symbiotic association with roots of legume plants.

Still others do so on their own. eg. Azotobacter spp are free living nitrogen fixers.

we cannot exactly call disease causing bacteria non-symbiotic because any type of relation is symbiosis. Then it can be classified as antagonistic, commensalism, amensalism and so on. Symbiosis is a broad term and usually refers to a relationship between two living systems , positive or negative , dual or singular.

So as I mentioned u may use both terms considering a common property.

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation:

1)It is the process of nitrogen fixation in soil in which nitrogen fixing bacteria live with host plants  to fix the nitrogen.

2) Bacteria and plant live in the condition where both take benefits from each other .

3) n this, bacteria mostly live in the nodules of roots of plant.

Non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation:

1)The nitrogen fixation that is done by free living bacteria in the soil in known as non-symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

2)The bacteria live in free state , no symbiosis with plants and directly fix the nitrogen to make it available for the organisms use.
