Most basically taxon is a group of living organisms and a category tends to indicate rank/status for that particular taxon.
For example: In case of humans we have Order-Primates. Here 'Primates’ is the taxon and 'Order' is the category ( for that particular taxonomic category i .e. Primates).
So, overall taxon can be simply defined as the group of organisms occupying a particular category/rank.
