Most basically taxon is a group of living organisms .

A category tends to indicate rank/status for that particular taxon.

For example: In case of humans we have Order-Primates. Here 'Primates' is the taxon and 'Order' is the category

A Taxa is any taxonomic unit and is plural of taxon.

For example, the class Mammalia is a taxon which includes all mammalian species.

Rank is simply the level of a taxon in the taxonomic heirarchy.

For example, the taxa Mammalia and Aves both have the same rank since they are both classes.
