Chain survey is performed in a straight line. Right angled offset measurements are taken along the way to points of detail.
A compass Survey will change direction and be a "zig zag" (called a traverse). Bearing and distance can be taken to points of detail
Of course, it's possible to combine the two and perform a chain survey between compass traverse stations!
