Groundwater is water that leaks out of rocks and soil and accumulates below the ground. The rocks in which groundwater is stored are called "aquifers". In general, aquifers are made of "gravel, sand, sandstone, or limestone". The water from these rocks flows down because there are large and interconnected spaces between the rocks, which make the rocks permeable (permeable).

The places where water fills in aquifers are called "saturated zones". The depth at which water is found on the surface is called the "water table". The water level can be shallow to one foot below the ground and can be up to several meters deep.
