The wings of a cockroach are external appendages attached to the prothorax and the mesothorax. There are 2 pairs, forewings and hind wings, the former serves to protect the latter which is folded over at rest and spread out during flight. 
The wings of the bird are actually modified forelimbs, attached to the pectoral girdle, to which feathers are attached.
