The poet herself experienced the worst form of racial discrimination in America she felt that the black American were not as free as they out to be they were denied basic right there were a number of restriction on them in the society African American longed for freedom and equality. this longing for freedom is expressed in the poem I know why the caged bird sings the poet presents towards the free word a metaphor for white American and the caged bird for an African American.the contrast between the two underline the flight of the in caged bird and his longing for the freedom and equality despite restriction he still sings for freedom.
