Continuous modernization and up gradation of the old plants,Giant mills, global scale capacity, improving energy efficiency along with backward integration to the global raw material sources has to lead the country's steel iron industry to a higher position in the global map.

Furthermore, quite a lot number of new plants are installed in the country as a result of huge foreign investment and state of the art technology. India's first steel plant Tata Steel was set up in the year 1907.

During the year 2014 to   2016, India was regarded as the third largest producer of raw steel.

In addition during these years, the country was the largest producer of sponge iron in the world.

India’s Iron and Steel Industry produced 91.46 million tons of total finished steel and 9.7 million tons of raw iron. In India most iron and steel is produced from iron ore.

This industry is characterizing in India with robust demand, increasing investment, Policy support and competitive investment.

The United States was the world’s third-largest producer of raw steel in the year 2014. In the same year, the USA was the sixth-largest producer of pig iron. The iron and steel industry of USA produced 29 million metric tons of pig iron and 88 million tons of steel.

Most iron and steel in the United States is now made from iron and steel scrap, rather than iron ore, unlike India.

The country is known to be a major importer of iron and steel, as well as iron and steel products.

In the USA there are two main types of steel mills. First is the traditional large integrated steel mill. These mills reduce metallic iron from ore and make it into pig iron and steel. The second type of mill is the mini-mill or specialty steel mill.

These mills produce new steel products by melting steel scrap. These mills now produce the majority of steel in the USA.
