Plateaus are also called tablelands like the Peninsular Plateau which is a tableland. This tableland was formed when Gondwanaland broke and the pieces drifted apart. It is composed of old crystalline, igneous and metamorphic rocks. The Peninsular Plateau consists of both broad and shallow valleys, and rounded hills. WHEREAS The Northern Plain The Indo-Gangetic Plain, also known as Indus-Ganga and the North Indian River Plain, is a 255 million hectare (630 million acre) fertile plain encompassing most of northern and eastern India, the eastern parts of Pakistan, and virtually all of Bangladesh.

The Peninsular Plateau , triangular in shape, is the oldest landform in India which lies to the south of the Northern plains. It comprises of:
1. The Malwa plateau
2. The Deccan plateau.
These two plateaus are separated by the Vindhya and Satpura ranges.
