Minerals are responsible for various functions in our body. these are chemical elements that are found in food. Calcium and magnesium are needed for building and maintaining healthy bones and teeth. There are 21 amino acids required for protein formation among which 12 can be synthesised in the body and 9 are "essential" ie they cannot be produced in the body and must be obtained from the diet. These acids combine in different ways to form millions of different types of proteins.
Proteins are major structural components of cells and they also regulate body processed and can also be used as a source of energy.
Minerals:
Minerals are inorganic elements/ions required by the body. Of these calcium, sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus and magnesium are macronutrients. Even though they are macronutrients, the required quantities of microminerals are tiny compared to carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Other elements are required in trace quantities, like iron, zinc, iodine, etc. Technically water is also a dietary mineral.
They perform various biochemical functions and also form structural components, as calcium in bone.
