To Undergo is to encounter something challenging or unusual. Undergone is a past participle of Undergo and Underwent is a past tense of Undergo.

  • Underwent is used when discussing a prior incident simply and without much extra complexity in the phrase structure and it can be used to discuss a prior action that was successfully finished.

For Eg:

  1. He "underwent" a terrible accident last week,
  2.  I "underwent" surgery last year for my shoulder,
  • Undergone is a past participle of Undergo. To use a past participle it always requires an auxiliary verb mostly "has". When speaking in the past perfect verb tense, which is used to discuss events that occurred entirely in the past, you use the word "undergone" in the past participle.

For Eg:

  1. She has undergone many tough battles and came out stronger every single time.
  2. He has undergone some very unfortunate events in his personal life, but he’s stronger for them.

Hence here is the difference between both the words.
