At the time of adopting the constitution, there was only one union territory of Andaman and Nicobar islands. Presently, there are seven union territories. NCT of Delhi, Chandigarh and Lakshadweep were formed by separating the territory from the erstwhile states.India is a federal union comprising twenty-nine states and seven union territories, for a total of 36 states and union territories. The states and union territories are further subdivided into districts and further into smaller administrative divisions.
