In a unitary system, the central government has all the power. In a federal system, some powers are given to the central government and other powers are given to the lower levels of government (provinces or states).

under the unitery system there is only one level of govt. but in federal system there ia 2 or more than 2 level of govt.
In the unitery system , the centre govt. can pass on orders to the provincial or local govt. bit in federal system, the central govt. can not give orders to state govt. to do something
In unitery system state govt. are not having independent powers and they are answerable to center govt . but in federal system, state govt. has powers of its own for which it is not answerable to centre govt.
